Captivating movie !
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
This movie tries to be everything at once. Fails at everything besides being a very gory parody. Clearly inspired by Cannibal Holocaust and similar movies of the 80ties, instead of going for the shock value of trash movies it quickly turns into some kind of a cannibal theme parody. Most of the actors and extras were smiling time to time. The gore scenes were well made yet still their purpose was not to shock or disgust you, but rather to confuse you on how to feel. Seeing confused extras doing something they don't understand and looking into the camera... I guess Eli Roth finds these scenes funny or something, but not everyone has such a twisted mind to be able to enjoy gore for the sake of gore (or laughs).Story is pretty straightforward yet still has tons of plot holes. Cannibals, intelligent enough to understand planes, mobile phones and to breed pigs, still eat humans for some reason. And they make it look like everyday routine, kids having fun while eating human flesh...Again. Why?The ending just spits on your face. They clearly tried to steal the "who are the real monsters" message, but this surely doesn't work in a movie like this. Just makes the lead actress an asshole in the end, she learned nothing. It's not even good trash, it's confusing, stupid, overly long and kind of boring.
The Green Inferno is a charming little flick, perfect for cozying up and enjoying with the family. Its structured with profound emotion rippling through our hearts as we cheer on a wonderful cast on an adventure into unknown plains. This movie is full of touching moments between broad characters with so much chemistry we cant help but fall in love with them. Its such a joy to see them interact with one another. There is as much stamina in this picture as there is passion. It captures you into its heavily spirited sentiment and never lets go. As the story progresses it only burrows deeper into your soul and leaves you in a state of peaceful wonderment. Don't put off watching this monumental cinematic eye opener any longer.
Not every movie has to be a cinematic masterpiece to be enjoyable. I'd been looking forward to watching this one since it's release. I'd missed it's theatrical run due to family commitments and had largely forgotten about it until it was added to Netflix a couple of days ago. It's hard not to enjoy it in my opinion. Yes, the acting is crap but who watches Horror movies of this particular type studying the acting? At it's very core this is an old fashioned adventure movie, the plot is basic but effective. The pace of the film works really well and I did find it to be quite tense and thrilling hoping that at least one character would escape. The movie also delivers on the gore front, the color is absolutely glorious. Vibrant greens contrast with the blood red of the tribe to create a sickening feeling.A final point before I wrap up, I see a lot of comments about the message behind the movie. Slacktivism etc, don't get bogged down in all that. We don't need a profound reason to find a bunch of 20 somethings stranded in the jungle and captured by cannibals, just accept it and strap yourself in!! In the grand scheme of things I think I enjoyed this more than the likes of Cannibal Ferox, Jungle Holocaust etc. Not as good as Cannibal Holocaust though.
I'm a huge horror fan so I've seen most of Eli Roth's movies and I'm generally not overly impressed with them. This is not only his most disturbing movie but it's full of dark humor. It's a fantastic homage to cannibal tribe movies of the past and is a great warning film for all those social justice warriors. Good gory fun plus jokes about diarrhea and masturbation.
