Very interesting film. Was caught on the premise when seeing the trailer but unsure as to what the outcome would be for the showing. As it turns out, it was a very good film.
Amazing worth wacthing. So good. Biased but well made with many good points.
Before I saw this film I considered The Ramones to just be :-a) A T-shirt band (that is after all where most of their revenue has come from !)b) A 'Punk' band (ie: vulgar trendy bohemian Top Of The Pops fad in the 70's !)c) That band with that naff, kitschy sing-along "Hey-ho; Let's Go" song.HOW WRONG I WAS !! 2 years ago (Spring 2016) I stumbled across a copy of this; a film I'd never even heard of. Just by looking at the DVD cover I could see they were being portrayed a anything but a crappy punk band ! I bought it, watched it and loved it; I INSTANTLY BECAME A RAMONES FAN ! This film portrayed them as a neutral, universal Rock 'n' Roll band; the film bared no reference to punk whatsoever ! References throughout the film to The Stones, Led Zeppelin and Ted Nugent aided in ranking them alongside other Rock 'n' Roll greats, neutral of contemporary 'scene' fads like punk, heavy metal, etc. As for the story, so OK, maybe it's not particularly original or witty. Sort of a metaphor for Nazi cultural oppression; think Tipper Gore's doppelganger of a school principal attempting to establishing an academic regime, free of Rock 'n' Roll and any other alternative socio-cultural sectors, where the kids - and the school music teacher - rebel through dancing, gigging and arson ! The Actual Ramones appear and perform throughout the film. An extensive gig scene, complete with pogoing rats, subtitled lyrics and 'Gabba-Gabba-Hey' placard, is a perfect introduction to their music for people - myself previously included - unfamiliar with the band; 'Teenage Lobotomy', 'Sheena...' and the title track are all present. The Ramones aside, a 29-year-old P.J. Soles plays a 17/18-year-old dominant student Riff Randell, at a school where Rock'n'Rollers are cool and jocks/cheerleaders are dorks !Overall, this film is not only fun, wild, loosely satirical and generally uplifting, but as I say, a really genuine portrayal of The Ramones, beyond all the fads the media associate them with. I think the people who disapprove of this film are the posers who do consider them a part of this punk tripe and think of them on the same wavelength as all that Jam-Clash-Pistols-Subs UK crap !
I liked this movie I remember there was one very well done scene in this movie where Riff Randell (played by P.J. Soles) is lying in her bed smoking pot and then she begins to visualize that the Ramones are in the room with her sing the song "I Want You Around" ...very very cool stuff. It was fun, energetic, quirky and cool. Yes I'll admit that the ending is way-way over the top and far fetched ...but it doesn't matter because it is fun this is a very fun movie. It's Sex, Pot and Rock n Rocll foreverI read that Cheap Trick was the band who was originally to star in this ..But I do not know if this is true or not
"Miss Evelyn Togar" (Mary Woronov) has just been hired as the new principal of Vince Lombardi High School and she is determined to install discipline in it. Standing in her way is a rebellious senior by the name of "Riff Randell" (P.J. Soles) and her best-friend "Kate Rambeau" (Dey Young). Yet while Riff is outgoing and doesn't care about her studies Kate is the total opposite as she is a very good student but rather and introverted. Along with that Kate has a crush on the captain of the football team "Tom Roberts" (Vincent Van Patten) who in turn has a crush on Riff. Unfortunately for Tom, Riff has a crush on the lead singer of the Ramones who just happen to be coming to town. But once again Miss Togar is standing in the way of Riff's happiness. Now rather than reveal any more of this film and risk spoiling it for those who haven't seen it I will just say that watching this movie was like watching a train wreck in slow motion—I had to keep watching in spite of the fact that the humor was hit-or-miss, the music wasn't exactly my style and the end was totally predictable. As a matter of fact about the only thing good about this movie was the presence of P.J. Soles who was definitely cute but not exactly capable of carrying the entire film by herself. Now don't get me wrong—this isn't a bad movie by any means and like I said before it kept my attention throughout. But there were some parts that could have used improvement and as a result I rate this film as only average.
A group of rock-music-loving students, with the help of the Ramones, take over their school to combat its newly installed oppressive administration. There really is not much that can be said about this film -- the plot is nothing special and the acting is pretty average. But as far as cult films go, this is about as cool as you can get. Just look at the list of those involved: Roger Corman, Dick miller, Joe Dante, Mary Woronov, Don Steele, P. J. Soles, Clint Howard... and on, and on...And then the Ramones, both starring and providing the soundtrack. I cannot say I am a huge fan, but they delivered in here.
