Nice effects though.
Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.
It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
This little known Sonic OVA from the mid-90s can be grating: the English dub is pretty bad and the story is a bit incoherent. But I won't lie, it has a considerable amount of cheesy 90s anime charm that prevents me from writing it off entirely. The OVA takes place in a different universe from the games or any of the existing TV series. Sonic and co live on a floating continent, while Dr. Robotnik (or Eggman-- unlike most people, I use the names interchangeably and have no preference) lives in the world below, which is a post-apocalyptic wasteland. The doctor holds the president and his daughter Sara for ransom in order to force Sonic to go to the lower continent to fight one of his robots. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles emerge victorious, but it turns out the whole thing was a trap designed to obtain Sonic's DNA in order to create Metal Sonic. They have one last battle in the north pole, with the fate of the world in the balance. Some of the characters are written differently from their game and American TV counterparts (which were already quite different with each other to begin with). Sonic and Tails are about the same, but Knuckles and Dr. Robotnik are distinct. Robotnik, while still an egomaniac, is more of a buffoon than he usually is and a pervert too, lusting after the main female character Sara. Knuckles is much more mellow and not gullible at all. He and Sonic aren't even rivals any longer, and he even refers to the blue blur as his "best friend"! Oh and he's a treasure hunter too.... with an Indiana Jones hat.... oh and he can fly. Not glide. FLY. The new characters can be irritating, but for the most part I found them funny. Sara is like a human version of Amy Rose, pining after Sonic and sporting a violent temper. The owl is a loony geezer and the president is just kind of there. The style is taken from the full motion video opening and ending of Sonic CD. It's cool looking and I wish it had been utilized in other Sonic media. The music is catchy and very 90s. If you liked the Japanese/European soundtrack for Sonic CD, then you'll love the music here. The voice acting is awful, but more in a "so bad it's good" fashion than in a "so bad it makes you want to cry" manner (like the 4kids dub for Sonic X).It's not close to touching SATAM, but this OVA is nowhere near the unpleasantness of Sonic Underground or Sonic X. It's one of my guilty pleasures: stupid and obnoxious, but fun.
Let me tell you a story. Once upon a time, Sonic The Hedgehog games were actually good. Because Sonic was popular the world over, SEGA decided to make a pilot for an anime series based on the Sonic characters around 1996. Unfortunately, they forgot that Sonic wasn't actually all that big in Japan. As such, it was never picked up.Cut to 1999. A group of hardcore otaku by the name of ADV Films realized that, with the imminent release of Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast, they could make a fair sum of cash by releasing the pilot as a direct-to-DVD movie here in the States. Hence, Sonic The Hedgehog: The Movie.I explained all that because I wanted to make it clear that a great opportunity was missed when nobody in Japan picked the pilot up. They could have made a killing on the US market.I mostly say this due to the animation. To say the least, it is absolutely gorgeous. The scenery is very detailed, the characters look exactly as they're supposed to, the actions scenes are nothing short of awesome, and it never descends into QUALITY at all. It captures the qualities of the video games perfectly, and the fact that it may remind fans of the FMV sequences in Sonic CD only helps.Granted, it's not perfect. The plot, which involves Sonic and Tails attempting to disable a generator in Robotnik's underground city before it explodes, is not very well developed, and is really just an excuse to watch the nice animation. The VAs are kind of love-em-or-hate-em, as well. I personally think they're alright, but I can understand why people would find them kind of annoying. People who aren't fans of the Sonic The Hedgehog games, or are only familiar with the post-Adventure games, probably won't get what the big deal is.It really is a shame that this was never picked up, as Sonic fans would have loved the show at the time. As it is, Sonic fans owe it to themselves to watch this, if only for the beautiful animation. If you are not a Sonic fan, however, you won't miss too much by skipping it.
I just saw this movie today on YouTube, which is kind of a hindrance, having to watch it in six different parts, but I was absolutely blown away by it!!! This movie is everything Sonic used to be, and should still be---fast, edgy, and cool. This, I'd say is a representation of all the cool things about Sonic, while Sonic 2k6 is the antithesis of The Sonic Movie. I saw the English dubbed version, and yet I was still blown away by it. I'm not usually a fan of dubbing, but I'm just cool with it. It's pointless censorship I don't like. Anyway, I love how the Sonic Movie has all sorts of violence and other inappropriate stuff. If you're a fan of Sonic, you must watch this movie. As Sonic says a lot in AoStH, it's "Way past cool!"
