To me, this movie is perfection.
So much average
People are voting emotionally.
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
In the beginning of the 1970's Goscinny and Uderzo wrote an Asterix comic called "Le domaine des dieux". It was a pretty funny comic, which worked on two levels : it gave the kids a good time with an entertaining adventure story full of gags and puns and it provided the adults with food for thought. It needs to be said, with regard to the second aspect, that this is an unusually insightful satire treating subjects such as housing inequality, urban sprawl, consumerism and architectural prestige projects gone wild. There are also some pretty astute barbs about mankind's disregard for nature and, especially, about the kind of malign imperialism which disguises itself as the voice of reason and progress and which crushes the poor and innocent by cutting them off from their natural environment and spiritual resources. And now the comic has been filmed. The result can be watched with a degree of pleasure, especially by the younger viewers, but it doesn't add much extra value to the original. Worse, it tends to blunt and obscure the source material's intelligence, sharpness and satirical edge. In other words : the movie is good for a few laughs and giggles and can be watched during a rainy afternoon, especially in the company of children. The original comic is better, however.
Viewed on Real D 3D with a decent audience that seemed to comprise (mostly) fans of both the genre and the original comics.Usually, I prefer not to watched dubbed fare, other than for fare where bad dubbing doesn't matter much. Cases in point: the badly dubbed (in English) Indonesian fare like the Raid movies and Gareth Evan's first movie, Jackie Chan Cantonese fare, Tony Jaa Thai fare and District B 13. All of those belong to the same genre - leaveyourmindsathome martial arts action fare. Who cares about lines? To be fair, 'The Raid 2; Berandal' is like the 'Godfather' in this genre, but more on that in a separate post. Now, most of the movies based on these beloved characters have come from France, and this one has to be the best of the lot, and hopefully acts as a precursor for better things to come. The screenplay takes plenty of liberties with the work its based upon, but the great thing about that is that it makes the whole thing more cinematic than any other adaptation that came before, and funny to boot. There are hilarious montages that tie back together, like the one with the main characters and boars in the forest, the ones with a Roman family being asked to come back with more and more documentation to move into the 'Mansions of the Gods' and so forth. One of the most confident screenplays I've seen in play for a long, long time. The animation, while staying true to the aesthetic introduced and followed by the comics, also ensures that it does not get 'fixed' or 'static' and acts the way a large screen movie should. The 3D is also not utilized just for show, the way it was with 'The Peanut movie' recently (Snoopy and Charlie Brown), but allows the frames to live and breathe, all the way, consistently. My only disappointment was the short shrift accorded to the character of Geriatrix's young wife, a favorite from the comics, that was missed out completely, and I wish there was more of Impedimenta, though I am thankful there were a few frames devoted to her shenanigans with Vitalstatistix. In conclusion, I am looking forward to a repeat viewing this weekend. And hopeful for 'Asterix in Corsica'.
I was very reluctant to see that one, most 3D adaptations of comics/animation being terrible in my opinion, and the last live action Asterix movies were just bad. I loved all the classic Asterix animation and read all comic books countless time as a kid and after. This was a really good surprise, everything is there, I laughed during the whole movie, which is definitely not something I can say of any recent Asterix movie (the live ones).True to the comics and old animation. With lots of jokes aimed both at children and adults.Voice of Obélix was a bit odd, and some parts of the story were too, but overall an excellent movie I'll definitely watch again! THIS is what I want to see more of, not those recent terrible live action movies!
Last live action Asterix (Mission Cleopatre) movie was almost unwatchable. I am a huge Asterix fan since my early years and a I even spent money on tickets for that film The disappointment was great. But, rejoice gauls warriors! Astérix: Le domaine des dieux is here! The 3d animated movie is based in one of the best graphic novels of the title character. The animation is nicely done and has nothing to envy to great American studies. Design of our beloved characters is well ported from 2d to 3d. The story is expanded with turns that enriches the narrative and makes you feel that hour heroes may not win the day against the roman invaders. Fear not the original story is all there just a little tinkered to make it into a full length movie. Everything funny that makes Asteris such a pleasure to read is there!I really really likes this Asterisk and I hope that they keep this direction instead recurring to mediocre live action films.
