A waste of 90 minutes of my life
I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.
I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
I like movies with Hillary Duff. Acting is not one of her strong points, but she lookes great and sweet and beautiful no matter what movie she's in. Yet it's a pity I couldn't give 'Greta' a better vote. The movie was just really, really bad. (I'm sorry Hillary, you looked great anyway! Wondering if she's ever gonna read this...) Duff plays a sweet, troubled child called Greta who's father killed himself when she was much younger. Her mother can't handle the child growing up and sends her too her grandparents (off course, it's a Hollywood movie and therefore not very original). Her grandparents are sweet folks who wouldn't hurt anybody. Greta hides herself behind a mask of sarcasm and tries really hard to shock almost everybody arround her. She even thinks of killing herself. But that though mask of her begins to break when she meets a boy...The movie did make me smile a lot. There was a lot of melodrama and the acting was sometimes really awful (which in turn is very funny ;-)). Earlier reviewers compare the movie with 'Juno'. That is a comparison I totally disagree with. The scetches in 'Greta' vaguely remind me of 'Juno', but that is all. The acting in 'Juno' was great, the characters well played and the theme far more interesting en well thought of than 'Greta'. So, in my humble opinion, you can't compare these two movies with each other. And to end this review: Greta is just bad. That's all, folks!
I have a lot of movies about which I can say "This film is really good! Excellent! One of my favorites". But if somebody ask me what is the best movie for me of the best, about the movie, without which I can't live, I will answer - "Greta". I watched it in November 2009 and every week I am watching it. Since that date. Because I can't imagine myself without "Greta". I knew about it because of one of my favorite actresses- Hilary Duff. She is definitely one of the best actresses (for me), because I like the way she acts. It is a story of Greta, whose mother is again "trying to save her marriage number nine", and she have to spend her whole summer in Jersey. Isn't Siberia the place they send you to die? And from her experience Ocean Groove isn't that much different. She will spend her summer with grandmother and grandfather, in their mausoleum, where it always smells like dessicated socks. She is always alone. She is rebellious. And she wants to die. She has her "To-die list" and "To-do list". This summer will show her what a real life means. Hilary Duff is awesome. This movie is like "Georgia Rule" starring Lindsay Lohan - I also like this film. Hilary plays very good by emotions and voice. Nobody can act like she does. I believed her, I believed Greta. Her partner Evan Ross was also very good at his role - romantic, prudent, charming... I saw pain in his eyes, love and forgiveness. This movie is an incredible one. I can't live without it. I need it. I fell it. Every moment. "Greta" is for lovers. "Greta" is for me.
Greta is a movie about a typical rebellious 17 year old girl with a unusual goal in life, to end it before the fun is over. When I first heard about the plot of this movie, I thought it was going to be just a typical Hilary Duff movie; I dint expect anything good of it. My girlfriend decided to go and get a movie one night out of the Redbox, and came home with According to Greta. I began watching and was instantly reminded of Lizzie Maguire(Hilary's voice is still exactly the same) and I was already under the assumption that it was going to be a long night. After I got over her light 12 year old voice, I realized that Hilary did a wonderful job. I can't find anything bad to say about her acting or the movie. Actually the ending could have had a little more depth to it but that happens in a lot of movies. The script was great(accept for the ending) every actor did a terrific job, and it made a lasting impression, and completely changed my negative views of Hilary Duff; she is a great actress and grew into a very beautiful young woman.
When i picked up this DVD from the stand I thought since it was cheap I'd check it out, I didn't expect much, it being a Hilary Fluff film and all. The girl at the register said it wasn't much chop either, so when i got home and we put it on, I was surprised. Most reviews say the movie focuses on the blossoming and forbidden relationship between Greta and Julie. I don't believe this is totally true. It's about a suicidal girl who is shipped to her grandparents because her mother can't handle her. Romance plays a secondary role but does admittedly help in her ridding her suicidal tendencies, though it isn't the main focus of the movie.Something no-one has mentioned yet, it did remind me quite a bit of Miley Cyrus's The Last Song, a rebel daughter going to a relatives for summer, builds better relationships with family, and develops relationship with local boy, all of which makes her a better happier person. Agreement with others on the Juno and Georgia Rule similarities too.I also(even though i don't think the film focuses on their romance)want to know what happens between Greta and Julie. The ending lets it down, it could have been an extremely amazing movie but they bombed the ending.Props to Hilary for a mature movie that shows she can do more.
