So much average
Story: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
Review: I really didn't have a clue about the plot in this movie but the action scenes are top class. The acting was a bit shaky in places and I did find the girl who joined the group, quite irritating, especially when she wouldn't stop screaming in the jungle. Anyway, the movie is basically about a rich man who hires Jackie Chan to retrieve 12 Chinese Zodiac animal heads which were stolen in the 1800's. After following all the clues, he ends up in France with his reliable team but the mission isn't as straight forward as they first thought. That's the bit of the plot that I did understand but when the other business men get involved, I got completely lost. Jackie Chans comedic acting wasn't bad because it was mixed up with some clever stunts but it was a bit silly in parts. Its basically a National Treasure meets Indiana Jones type movie which obviously went down well with audiences around the world, judging by the box office takings. Personally, the film did get on my nerves after a while because it jumped from one situation to another. With that aside, you can't fault the action in the movie which has proved that Jackie Chan has still got the ability to entertain audiences with his amazing Kung Fu skills. Watchable but quite confusing!Round-Up: At 61 years old, Jackie Chan is still coming out with top action movies, whilst doing most of the stunts himself, so he has definitely has made his mark in the Kung Fu entertainment world. They cleverly mixed the languages with English and Chinese so you don't have to concentrate on annoying subtitles. I'm sure they dubbed the movie for other countries because it's quite a big budget film. Anyway, I personally preferred Chan in the Drunken Master authentic days, before he decided to concentrate on his comedic movies but he still has an audience which flock to see his movies. This film was actually directed by Jackie Chan so it must have been hard to play the lead and do all of the stunts at the same time. He definitely can't complain about the profit that the movie made and I'm sure that they will come out with another part of this Armour of God series which started in 1986. Anyway, it's worth a watch just for the action and the funny Pirates that tackled them in the woods but the storyline is a bit sketchy.Budget: $26million Worldwide Gross: $145millionI recommend this movie to people who are into their action/adventure movies about a man who searches the world for 12 Chinese Zodiac artifacts which are worth a large amount of money. 4/10
I have long been a Jackie Chan fan for over 30 years now. To me, the man is one of the most amazing human beings alive today, and rarely fails to entertain!Unfortunately, when he made the move to Hollywood, those moments of failure came a little more than often.Thankfully, he son caught on, and before we knew it, Chan was back in HK giving his true fans what they all really wanted... Good HK styled Jackie Chan action!Jumping to 2012, the announcement and release of the 3rd part of some of my favourite Jackie films, the Amour Of God series, came to us in the form of Chinese Zodiac.Almost instantly, there was a host of fans and critics slamming the film, stating how ridiculous it was, awful plot, okay action scenes and heavy use of CGI.Lets face it folks, the most amazing action star in the world is over 60 now. Old enough to be your granddad! So please tell me, what are you expecting from him?Chinese Zodiac is one of the most fun, funny, and action packed Jackie Chan flicks we have had in a long time! It is as close as we have got since the turn of the century, to a hark back to the golden age of Hong Kong cinemas best in the 80's and early 90's.It shines as one of the best family films and action comedies out there, and is never out of our DVD player at home!Nodding to some of the best moments from Armour Of God 2: Operation Condor, we see Jackie and his fresh faced cast tackle pirates, police, spy's and gangsters as they globe-trot and kick ass in a bid to collect the infamous bronze heads of China.Hilarious and action packed, Chinese Zodiac is just simply brilliant an features a hell of an end scene that shames most Hollywood action flicks today!
The first half-hour is fine. Starts with a pretty good action sequence. My wife and I were off and running, and well-aware of what we were getting into - or at least we thought. This had a decent score here on IMDb, and I figured, given the track-record of Jackie's previous films, that it might have been even better than the score..You see, the wife and I have watched many Jackie Chan action flicks throughout our time together - so we know that they usually contain amazing action sequences, thin plots, questionable acting, and childish humor. We have no problem with that, like I said, we thought we knew what we were getting into. And at the 30minute mark - we were fine with the film. It was "Silly Jackie Chan Movie-Night" at our house, and we were pretty excited to escape in the silliness. But BOY DOES THIS THING GO SOUTH QUICK after that first half-hour. The biggest problem isn't the plot(which is record setting bad even for Jackie), but the main problems are with some terrible production shortcuts in the films second-half. Terribly fake painted backdrops, awful cgi, stupid character stereotypes, and just plain despicable film-making. Honestly, this thing makes the effects and action sequences in "King Solomon's Mines" from the 80's look good.Easily the worst film I've seen a long, long time. The editing/direction of the action sequences in the second half are deplorable, and the action from Jackie himself goes into terrible gimmick territory. The last hour is truly cringe-worthy. Go back and rent "New Police Story", a film that I only gave a 5/10, but looks like a best picture winner next to this piece of junk.I still love you Jackie, but for goodness sakes man, let someone else sit in the directors chair.33/100 I truly can't believe the positive reviews - and that comes from someone who has really enjoyed some of Jackie's silly action flicks throughout the years. This might be his worst. You Might like this if you like(d):drinking drain cleaner, jumping off high story buildings headfirst, getting kicked between the legs, and Master of Disguise(slightly worse).Don't say I didn't warn you.
Although I am not the biggest Jackie Chan fan around, for many years I have been sure to eventually catch each new movie he puts out. So when "Chinese Zodiac" came out on Blu-ray, you can be sure that I rented it. But after watching it, I have to say that my feelings are mixed about it. I will excuse the often lousy dubbing, since that is something that Chan couldn't have controlled. But I have to say that the plot is something of a mess. It's TOO fast-paced, often with important plot details unclear at the time and you have to wait until later in the movie to understand just what was going on. Also, the central characters don't have strong personalities. Second, some of the special effects are pretty weak. Now, I know that this movie didn't have a big Hollywood studio budget, but I think Chan should have worked with what he had, like he did with many of his movies a couple of decades or so ago. Third, some of the photograph is pretty weak, boasting ugly colors that are distracting.Still, there are some positive things to be found here. The photography may be weak, but otherwise there is some skilled camera-work. The plot may be incoherent at times, but the movie doesn't have any boring or tedious moments (well, except maybe for the scene on the wrecked ship - that does go on too long.) And when it comes to martial art action and stunt sequences, the movie does delivers. Chan may be getting old and starting to slow down, but he still knows how to deliver thrills. Weighing the good with the bad, the movie winds up being okay. If you are a Jackie Chan fan, you'll probably find the movie passable entertainment. Though odds are you won't find it one of his best. However, if you haven't seen a Jackie Chan movie before, this isn't the movie to start with. Start with something like "Police Story".
