NATIONAL LAMPOON'S ANIMAL HOUSE is a lively and likeable frat house comedy which may well be the best of its type; it's certainly the most entertaining I've seen, with John Landis' clever direction adding immeasurably to the fun of the proceedings. This is certainly a more enjoyable production than something like AMERICAN GRAFFITI, that's for sure; the kind of film to blow the cobwebs away. The film offers an ensemble cast of performers, all of whom put in energetic turns, none more so than John Belushi whose towering performance dominates the proceedings. Elsewhere, there's a mix of fresh talent (Tim Matheson, Karen Allen, Kevin Bacon) and more seasoned actors in support (the ever-dependable John Vernon and Donald Sutherland, for instance). The film is, like other NATIONAL LAMPOON features, essentially a series of sketches and set-pieces, but they feel fresh and funny, and there's never a dull moment.

Animal House is not just funny, it's fun. John Landis didn't just do technically accomplished work, but he was able to translate the air of fun from the shoot to the screen. Every single actor is completely relaxed here, not so much acting as just being.Animal House didn't just comment on the zeitgeist, it influenced it. In real life the actions of its protagonists would be shameful, but on the silver screen, they become a manifesto of the counter-culture. Those who obey the rules are always shown as uptight, thinly veiled nazis, while their adversaries (our heros) celebrate life by having fun in every which way they can.It requires a high intelligence to create something this stupid. The jokes and actions in the film are idiotic, but they are so well put together and so layered that they feel authentic. Kinda like Laurel & Hardy comedies, but much, much ruder.Animal House still feels fresh. Must be its anti-establishment ethos, which just never gets old. Or, it's just fun. And fun is never "over". I mean, was it "over" when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

Delta Tau Chi is the most anarchic fraternity on the Faber College campus. Its students have the worst grades and the fraternity is often a source of embarrassment to the college. Egged on by a rival fraternity, Dean Vernon Wormer is determined to shut them down. All he needs is an excuse.Yeah, I know this is regarded as some sort of comedy classic. Hard to see why though. Not that funny, mostly silly and random. Maybe the antics on display were out-there and subversive for 1978 so that explains it. In 2017 it just seems juvenile. Or maybe you have to be younger than 15 to enjoy it...

This movie is probably my favorite film that has ever hit a single screen. The move takes place in the 60s and shows you what college would of been like, and if you were part of the Delta Frat house then you were probably having the best time of your life. Delta is the craziest ferturnity on the campus at Faber College, members of the college even the Dean is trying to do everything in their power to get Delta off campus but they find out after its all said and done that you don't mess with crazy college kids that are just trying to party and have a good time. Throughout the whole movie there is a good variety of music that is played, contains classic love and party songs. Before I watched this movie I was not interested in college one bit but now there is no doubt I will be like John Belushi.
