"It Takes All Kinds of Critters to Make Farmer Vincent's Fritters!"Quick Movie Review of Motel Hell (1980)I have always loved low budget, grindhouse, and low budget horror films. I find them to be fun, funny, and willing to take a risk. I have had the opportunity to see a lot of 80's horror and 80's horror sleaze. On the other hand, I have never viewed the cult classic Motel Hell, until last night. The story is very interesting; the story follows a family that sells "jerky" and sausages to travelers that come through their small town. What those travelers do not realize is that the yummy treats that they are eating contain human flesh! The way they "harvest" their meat is very cool too .They cause motorists to have accidents on the road, and then capture their prey and bury them in their garden with only their heads sticking out of the ground. This is why I don't eat sausages and jerky. The successful horror comedy is a rare and elusive find. Not only does it need to be both scary and funny, but also it has to blend the two together in almost perfect symmetry. Some of the best films that strike an ideal balance between terror and laughs include Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Evil Dead II, An American Werewolf In London, The Return Of The Living Dead, Re-Animator, The Cabin in the Woods, and Fright Night. Now that I have seen Motel Hell, I can say this movie is now included on this list. For me this films plot is enough to get my attention. The plot seems strange and bizarre! At times the film is scary, at times cheesy, other times funny, and comes off like a parody of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Psycho. Now this is by no means a perfect movie. For one thing, the setup is slow. Also, the acting is bad, it is very low budget and it takes a while for some things to get going. This movie is certainly a movie most horror fans have heard of. If you are a serious horror head, 80's film fan, or you like cheesy movies, this movie should be somewhere on your radar. Other people, I'm not sure you will enjoy it. I'm kind of stuck on what rating I should give this. I know it is a bad film with cheesy elements. However, it did keep my attention and I found it entertaining. Hmmm I believe Motel Hell earns a 6 out of 10Horror fans, 80's fans, and fans of old school sleaze I'm sure will enjoy this. However, if you are not one of these individuals, I do not think you will enjoy it as much.
Poor horror/black comedy with Rory Calhoun as a rural motel owner and farmer who murders travelers, cooks them, and sells the meat. Its fans praise its value as a satire on backwoods slasher movies. While watching it I couldn't help but feel that praise is overstated to cover up for the movie's many failings as a horror movie. It's not scary or suspenseful at all. As with most supposed black comedies like this, you won't find yourself laughing. I'm told that's the point but I'll be damned if I understand that. Seems like a buffer against criticisms about its quality, if you ask me. You can't say its a bad horror flick because it's not supposed to be scary. You can't say it's a bad comedy because it's not supposed to be funny. Sounds convenient to me. All I know is I didn't enjoy it and I can't recommend it.
This is an unabashed B-movie black comedy. Nobody should have any illusions. The acting is over the top amateurism. The writing is unwavering parody. The characters are unflinching stereotypes. The style is low grade Corman-esk. But whatever problems and limitations it has, the movie enjoys itself and it shows on the screen. This is a black comedy that is having fun with the horror genre.Farmer Vincent (Rory Calhoun) kidnaps unsuspecting travelers and buries them in his garden. Unfortunately for his victims, they are buried alive, and grown like cabbage. Then he harvest them. You will enjoy the gore.
If you haven't seen Motel Hell, now is your time to see it. This is a horror/parody/black comedy film that is well done. Farmer Vincent is actually a well likable guy considering what he uses as an additive in his famous smoked meats. His meats are like no other you have ever tasted. Set in a small town Vincent (Rory Calhoun) and his sister Ida (Nancy Parsons)share a grotesque secret: They are cannibals and the purveyors of human flesh in the guise of farm raised and smoked pork. Some never forget scenes are the "garden" where Vincent and Ida "plant" the humans they have captured, severing their vocal cords to keep them from screaming and the road scene where girls are captured using fake cows in the road. There are some genuinely creepy scenes in this film that will leave you thinking about it after the film is over. The movie centers around a young female Terry whom Vincent had caught in the guise of rescuing her and her boyfriend. After smoking her boyfriend, Terry and Vincent fall in love much to the abhorrence of Ida. Vincent tries to keep Terry from finding out the family secret but that proves to be too much resulting in an unforgettable ending. This movie might even make you hungry! Watch for the swingers scene, it's hilarious.
