There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
This is not a good movie. It is very slow. It is also very boring. The story line is awful. It just a waste of time. Do not see this awful movie. See Psycho do not see this.
Actress Christine Clay and her husband are arguing in their cliff top house. The next morning, her friend Robert Tisdall finds her dead body on the beach and runs off to get help. Two girls see him running and accuse him of being the murderer. He faints during police interrogation and the chief constable's daughter Erica Burgoyne helps revive him. His lawyer is incompetent and he escapes from court. As the police go on a manhunt, he finds Erica with her broken down car.Derrick De Marney does a puppy dog face while Nova Pilbeam does a spunky young woman. There isn't any actual mystery since it starts with the suspect husband. It's questionable why she would not turn him in right away even if she believes his innocence. It depends too much on the love at first sight idea. It's too quick. It would be better if there is more to her reasoning. The couple has a little bit of fun chemistry. It works as an early rom-com action thriller. The miniatures look like children's toys and the black-face is awkward for modern audiences. This may not be a classic but is a useful watch for Hitchcock fans. It is well-made for the most part with his brand of sly humor.
Hitchcock's formula for his The 39 Steps (1935) proved so successful, he ran it again in his Young And Innocent two years later. Falsely suspected murderer on the run teams up with a woman who at first does not believe him, then not only does, but falls in love with him as well, helping him to further elude the law.In this one the girl is the Constable's daughter, adding a further bit of intrigue. Hithcock's oft- used theme of the "wrong man" being accused of a crime has its second outing here.Hitch loved to re-use actors. Nova Pilbeam played the kidnapped daughter in The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) and is now enough of a young woman to end her career as a child actress and play a mature role. John Longden, George Curzon, Percy Marmont and Basil Radford are all Hitch alumna, continuing to appear in Hitch's films. The film itself moves very quickly, and is full of both suspense and humor, as well as being quite romantic. Pilbeam and Derrick de Marnay play well together. He reminds me a bit of Leslie Howard. The writing is quite excellent. Dialogue is quick with plenty of close-ups and rapid fire editing. The film opens in the middle of a marital argument, which will soon lead to a murder. It certainly plunges the viewer right into the action. There is much comedy in a misbehaving fountain juxtaposed with an attempt to wash blood from a wound. The birthday party, which the couple accidentally fall into and then desperately try to escape from with the police hot on their heels, is full of both suspense and comedy. The stopping to rescue the heroine's dog, despite police on the trail, shows the hero's character and is the first step at displaying his innocence to the heroine. This is done without dialogue, simply an act of kindness establishing character. There is a hair-raising rescue of the heroine that has us on the edges of our seats. However, the one shot that remains in everyone's mind is an incredible reverse crane shot (this two years before GWTW's claim to have created the first one in the Atlanta railroad scene of Scarlett among the wounded). This begins very high and pans across two rooms of a nightclub, before picking out a character and then moving down in one amazing movement to a close-up of the character's eyes, which then produce the damning clue to the killer's identity. My print ran 82 minutes. All in all, a vastly entertaining and fascinating film. Hitch hit his stride in 1934 with The Man Who Knew Too Much and then proceeded to direct one hit after another (The 39 Steps, Secret Agent, Sabotage and now Young And Innocent (a dumb title, by the way, as was its American title, The Girl Was Young). Another feather in the Master's cap. He was to direct only two more UK films, before moving to the USA and Selznick's Rebecca.
A man is seen running away from a dead body, when in fact he going to get help. So he says, in this tale of murder, courtesy of director Alfred Hitchcock. In fact, we do see him first encountering the body, and only after that do two young ladies, going for a walk on the beach, find it as well and him running away from the scene of the crime. The body had apparently washed up on shore. But, when the circumstances look bad for the young man (it didn't help that he knew her, but of course), he manages to escape so that he find out who really did it. Of course, he meets the chief constable's daughter, who is "Young and Innocent." There was also another title for which this film was known, The Girl was Young, but by changing it for whatever reason, the title could now be construed to mean both of the leads, but presumably more him, due to the fact he's accused of murder. But also, she's young and naive, which probably was the original meaning. At first, she feels her duty to turn him in and all that good stuff, but of course he gets to her. They travel together with means of looking for his raincoat, which was stolen from him and of which its belt was the means by which the murder victim was strangled. The chemistry between the leads are very good and believable, which makes the film very enjoyable. Despite the fact this older Hitchcock film has gotten overlooked by other Hitchcock films with more stature and shock value, like Vertigo, The Birds and Psycho, this little winner should be seen more often. If you find "Young and Innocent," you won't be disappointed. Let's be young and innocent together!
