In this true story, Veronica Guerin is an investigative reporter for an Irish newspaper. As the drug trade begins to bleed into the mainstream, Guerin decides to take on and expose those responsible. Beginning at the bottom with addicts, Guerin then gets in touch with John Traynor, a paranoid informant. Not without some prodding, Traynor leads her to John Gilligan, the ruthless head of the operation, who does not take kindly to Guerin's nosing.

Undescribable Perfection
This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
Thank you Mr. Schumacher for making this movie about a very brave woman. I loved watching this movie. It is a movie which was based and documented bu the real facts. So it makes watching this movie a real wonderful experience that moves everyone watching in many ways.Cate Blanchett did a perfect job in impersonating Veronica Guerin.More than one journalist deserves such a movie ........But one is high above my list, therefore my request : Please Mr. Schumacher : make such a beautiful movie about Anna Politkovskaja who dared criticize Poetin. Thank you for the beautiful film anyway.
Surprised that the user rating was only 6.3, I stumbled into this movie about a half hour after it began; yet, I feel qualified to write a review because I have taught film in a university setting and offer a free course in film appreciation at my local senior center.I didn't previously study the work of Cate Blanchett because I wasn't fond of the films she appeared in. I don't rate Gwyneth Paltrow highly because she is over-rated as an actress and rose to the top because of her father's success in film (nepotism), therefore, I skipped 'Shakespeare in Love.' What impresses me about actors is the way they can 'fake' an accent. Cate is Australian but did very well with an Irish borough. Al Pacino is good at developing an accent for his roles which is why he may have been chosen to portray Joe Paterno in an upcoming film.I read as many stories as I could about Veronica Guerin and the film tells the story with accuracy. One reader asks why anyone would want to kill Veronica. Answer: 190 journalists (according to the closing credits) have been killed since Guerin, the most famous to Americans being Daniel Pearl. Journalism is a dangerous profession, especially when on assignment in the middle east.Cate Blanchett is a great actress and Veronica Guerin was a journalistic hero. This film lost a lot of money, which is a shame.
Veronica Guerin is an Irish biopic that features Cate Blanchett in the title role. The screenplay by Carol Doyle and Mary Agnes Donoghue focuses on Irish journalist, whose investigation into the drug trade in Dublin led to her murder in 1996.It was directed by Joel Schumacher. Guerin is a relentless crime reporter for The Sunday Independent during the 1990's. The screenplay focuses on her pursuit of the underground drug trade in Dublin, which she suspects is led by mobster Martin "The General" Cahill. When Cahill's gang is attacked, she suspects mobster Gerry "The Monk" Hutch is responsible. Not deterred by threats or gunshot wounds, she uses thug John Traynor as an informer to help out her investigation of psychotic mobster John Gilligan. The film provides us great performances as Blanchett gives a tour de force performance as Guerin. Sporting a perfect Irish accent, she imbues the character great screen presence that we do care for her character. Also, the film was an engrossing thriller despite of an average screenplay that resorted to standard movie plot rather than a character study of the journalist herself.
I just saw the film for the first time last night. The main impression I took from it was how incompetent the local gardai (Irish police) were. It seemed that they had no clue how to progress with the investigation, given the evidence of Capone-like behaviour in Dublin's gangland.Maybe Gerry Bruckenheimer (the film's producer) could show them how. After all, he has enough experience from the CSI detective series he produces.Apart from that, Blanchett's and Hind's performances were great. Paul
