Wow! Such a good movie.
Excellent, Without a doubt!!
Yo, there's no way for me to review this film without saying, take your *insert ethnicity + "ass" here* to see this film, like now. You have to see it in order to know what you're really messing with.
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
Shortened movie quotes aside, we get a real intimate behind the scenes look of a very compelling and appealing "character" in politics. He had the guts to stand up and I guess it would have been a feast to see him and Anthony Scaramucci go head to head. Now that could almost be a political PPV word fight. But even so, the a glutton for punishment Weiner, digs himself a hole .. or rather quite a few, that he cannot seem to escape.Chances are you have heard of him (and his infamous "selfies"). If not be aware that this has some colorful language and of course a sexual matter as a topic. It is sort of surprising that Weiner allows us to be so close to him ... via camera that is of course. There are a couple of moments where the documentarian is breaking the fourth wall .. understandably so, because like us, he is confused at what is going on ... Very intimate look and surely not for everybody, but definitely very powerful and engaging.
One of those cases where the cameras are there at the right place and at the right time, Weiner, a documentary that focuses its attention on disgraced US politician Anthony Weiner and his comeback to politics, that saw the talented yet flawed personality attempt to become Mayor of New York City only to have more dirt unleashed about his extra-curricular activities derail his goals yet again. What was initially set to be an underdog tail of redemption and trial against adversity in an age where the modern media can make or break politicians like no other era before it, Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg's film becomes a truly cringe-worthy and hard to watch experience that you just can't help but be enthralled by as Weiner's stoic determination and passion for his craft sets him on a path of self-destruction as the whole world watches on and judges. You almost feel bad for being a part of this time in Weiner's life and it's hard to actually understand why Weiner would let the cameras continue to follow him on his quest for redemption as the increased scandal behind his love for sultry online communications dominates his every move but it's what makes Weiner such a fascinating figure as his layered personality that quite clearly craves attention and the spotlight makes for fascinating examination.Watching Weiner go toe to toe with general punters in the street or engage in verbal stoushes on the floor of parliament is exciting and mind blowing and the whole time as the man's life is derailed time and time again you can't help but wonder just what type of job the passionate fighter may've been able to do had he controlled his darker side and let the good win out and with the backing of his then wife Huma Abedin, it's quite likely that Weiner could've been one of the worlds most respected members of congress, not the world's most famous photo happy one.Final say – An insightful look into US politics, mayoral campaigns and the life and times of a complicated politician, Weiner is a must watch for any fan of American political life and those that love their documentaries gritty and on the fly. Weiner is edge of your seat viewing that is akin to being a part of a wild ride you want to hop off but can't as the destination will have you glued to your seat.4 bakery stoushes out of 5
I really like the documentary because it does not editorialize. There is not one voice over in the whole thing. It is just Anthony Weiner ramping up his attempt to win the Democratic Mayoral primary, which in New York, is tantamount to winning the mayor's race since the city is overwhelmingly Democratic. Weiner had been the seven term liberal firebrand of a Democratic congressman from Brooklyn until a case of him sexting a woman along with pictures of his private parts came to light and caused him to resign in disgrace in 2011.His campaign starts out with hope in the spring of 2013, but soon with his rise in the polls, more sexting by Weiner rises to the surface because he is in the limelight again. He tries to paper over it, and the documentary lets you see him trying to paper over it, by saying that he had already said he had problems in his marriage and that he had never said exactly when the sexting problem began and ended. This sounded too much like "it depends on what your definition of is is" from the Clinton years and he crashed and burned politically, winding up in the single digits on primary day. This is no fluff piece. You see Weiner lose his temper, get involved in shouting matches with a guy in a Deli, and with Lawrence O'Donnell on liberal friendly MSNBC. Weiner thinks it makes him look like a fighter, instead it comes across as a refusal to face his problems. And as for his wife Huma Abadin, I just felt so sorry for her. Weiner must be surely suffering from an addiction if he is chasing after random women on the internet with such a smart sexy lady as his wife. After the more recent sexting comes to light, Huma never really says anything, but you can tell by her posture and look of indifference that she is likely mad as hell under that calm cool exterior. Worse, she is probably profoundly disappointed in someone who had regained her trust. One particular scene said it all for me as to Weiner's self centeredness. When the additional sexting comes to light he tells Huma he wants her with him all day. Not because he is worried about her mental state or needs her emotional support, but because he is "afraid someone (the press) will get to her".It's too bad that such a narcissist and sex addict was also rolled into the personality of somebody who seemed to genuinely care about average people, had an average upbringing so he knew where other people were coming from, and was willing to fight for what he thought was right. What a waste.
This is one of the best documentaries I have ever seen. It follows the real life story of Anthony Weiner as he runs for the Mayor of NYC after a national sexting scandal. Our hero - Mr. Weiner - is a tragic hero who sews the seeds of his own destruction while at the same time fights to save his family and his legacy. It seems to me that Anthony has a disease called sexual addiction - which does not mean that he is addicted sex more than it means he has an impulse that makes him take risky behavior. People with sexual addiction can get some help and fix the problem. But - it is a serious illness. The pain on his wife's face as she deals with these scandals is harrowing - and it does make me wonder how he could put her through this. Also - there is a young woman he sexted that goes out of her way to draw attention to herself in the film - and she seems very selfish. This movie is a masterful work of cinema that sheds insight into a mind of a self destructive brilliant human being. At the end - someone asks, "Why are you letting me film this?" Good question - and perhaps the answer is that this is a truly great story - and it needed to be told!
