Good concept, poorly executed.
There are better movies of two hours length. I loved the actress'performance.
It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
This 3rd entry in the Blind Dead series may be the weakest link, but it still has a lot going for it. First of all, like all the films in the series, Ghost Galleon has some of the most original looking zombies ever committed to celluloid. We get to see plenty of them, but at times their presence on a dark boat can be obscured. They also don't turn in any kind of high body count which is what fans expect from a zombie film. This makes it kind of the oddball in this fine quadrilogy, but perhaps De Ossorio was being influenced by Italy's Giallo films at the time and was going more for atmosphere. I say this because this movie is almost pure creepy atmosphere with it's shapes, shadows and sounds. The main setting of the haunted, centuries old ship is also terrific even if the miniature version of the boat looks more like a 4th grade class project. Despite the lack of death, blood and serious action I never once felt the film was boring. The feel of dread and hopelessness kept me wondering who would win the day and the magnificent ending made me proud to be a horror fan.
The third of the Blind Dead movies is also the worst. Unlike the previous two entries it is not scary for a moment and doesn't conjure up much in the way of atmosphere. At the beginning of the film three swimsuit models are being photographed by a woman who refers to them as "Chico, Groucho and Harpo". This may be the movie's most memorable scene. Another model arrives and demands to know what happened to her roommate. Apparently the girl has been sent with another model on a boat out into the ocean for a publicity stunt. She and her partner can claim to have been "lost at sea". Uh huh.The girls come across the "ghost galleon" of the film's title and decide to board expecting to find help, despite the fact that the boat looks like something out of the middle ages. For as much time as the movie spends aboard the boat, very little of it is actually explored. Why don't the characters just take a quick look around, surmise that there is nothing usable on the boat, and get off again? The girl's roommate, the bitchy photographer, a kooky academic and a couple of other people set out to find what happened to the girls and also end up trapped on the boat. The blind dead are sleeping off the previous night's killing in coffins in the ship's hold, but soon are trying to kill the remaining characters as well, while they try to make it through the night and attract the attention of passing ships.I'm not sure why this movie didn't work. I think it mostly has to do with the setting. The ship is not interesting, and apparently the filmmakers knew that, because we see so little of it. We never get a sense of it as a place that we can imagine protecting as with the church in Return of the Evil Dead, the previous movie in the series. It is a tradition for the Blind Dead films to save their best moments for the end. In the Ghost Galleon, it is far too little, far too late, and I wasn't scared as much as relieved that I didn't have to spend any more time on that bloody boat.
The Ghost Galleon (1974) * (out of 4) The third film in the Blind Dead series has some models getting lost at sea and winding up on a 16th century ship. On board they run into the Templar knights. Pretty soon other people are looking for the ship and the secrets that it holds. The first time I watched this movie it was on VHS under the title of HORROR OF THE ZOMBIES. I had no idea about the Blind Dead series and just found a cheap video with the word zombies in the title so I bought it. I found the movie to be incredibly awful when I was in my teens and time certainly hasn't improved this thing. Considering how good the first two movies were, it's even more shocking at how bad THE GHOST GALLEON is. Even though it features Euro favs Jack Taylor and Maria Perschy, this isn't nearly enough to save a really awful movie. There are all sorts of problems with this film but I guess the majority of it is aimed at the fact that there's really not too much going on. This film obviously suffers from its low-budget, which simply doesn't allow director Amando de Ossorio to do much. It reminds me of those poverty row movies from the 40s that didn't have a budget so they just had people stand around and talk. There's a lot of scenes like this where people just talk about boring things that make you constantly look at the clock. It certainly doesn't help that the characters are extremely boring. As for the Templar knights, whenever they're on the screen they're certainly the most interesting thing. It's really too bad they spend so much time off camera and it should be noted that they only kill one person on screen. This scene is rather effective as is the closing sequence but outside of this there's really not too much going on in this movie.
I thought the second in this series was considerably less effective than the first and as for this, the third, well what can I say? I guess, this was made quickly and for little money and that whilst the idea must have seemed a good one, once you are stuck on a boat you do tend to be stuck, without a paddle as it were. The dialogue is terrible, I'm not sure the acting was as bad as it seemed , it may have been partly down to the dubbers. Too many sequences of bikini clad girls making vain attempts to do something in rather dark conditions. The 'Blind Dead' are without their horses and make nothing like the impact that they did in the other two films, even the fact that they are blind seems to have been glossed over. There is also little of the nastiness or real sense of fear and no suspense, so this really is a considerable disappointment.
