An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
OK, a bunch of people I can't care about - except the guy with TB cos I kinda feel sorry for him - all die. Oh one doesn't, but I don't care about her either. The story is kinda cool and the whole scenario can and should work, but it's just poorly written and you can't engage or empathise with anyone. I give it a 2 cos giving it a 1 is just plain mean. Wouldn't ever give anyone a 1 no matter how bad.
A straightforward, low budget action thriller with a post apocalypse setting. The cheapness of this production is hidden by some slick greyed-out photography, which makes the setting look bleak and washed-out, as is the intention. I'm not a huge fan of this predictable washed-out look but it's done to such a degree here that THE DAY appears to be a black and white movie.Otherwise it's business as usual, with a straightforward storyline and some interesting characters to recommend it. There's a certain air of unpredictability to the unfolding events which makes it more than watchable, and the action, when it hits, is well handled. Certainly the cannibalistic bad guys are generic and could have been replaced by vampires or zombies with the same effect, but then the focus isn't on the exterior villains.Instead this is almost a reprise of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, with much of the tension coming from within the group. Shawn Ashmore is a solidly reliable prop, as he was in FROZEN, but it's THE LAST EXORCISM's Brianna Barnes who really shines as Nikki, the outsider in the group who has her own hidden secrets. Barnes gives a compelling turn as the unlikeable character who grows on you, before ending up the most interesting thing in the whole thing. There's also a good turn from Dominic Monaghan, much better than he was in I SELL THE DEAD. I think it's fair to say that THE DAY is no classic but it's much more interesting than I expected.
The acting was actually very well done despite all odds. While the writing and directing were an atrocity to films. The director didn't seem to understand the concept of peripheral vision, and believed simply panning the camera was an excuse for people "teleporting" away. Its almost as if he believed everyone was a ninja and could simply disappear in plain sight. The writing was equally bad, although the movie was set in a post- apocalyptic world no explanation was ever given. Was it a nuclear war, a virus, a violent climate change, I don't know? Because the writer didn't feel that back-story was a part of his job description. Couple that with poorly developed characters also lacking a back-story, a horrible plot, shoddy dialogue and you get yourself the box office bomb named, The Day.
This is a WWE film. The people on the Cover (AVATAR) of the movie are actually the bad guys, and the description describes them. In the same mysterious apocalyptic catastrophe that effected "The Road" and "HELL" a group of scavengers descends on an Abandoned Farm House. They trigger some booby traps that alert them in this world, with Cut-Throat lil' girls who grow into decapitating young women, they realize the house was bait and they're prey and the predators are on their way. instead of escaping they decide to hold off and fight them off. The bodies start to pile-up more than enough for cannibals to feed on and fight anther day. But instead they don't want food they want murder kill em all. on one side a charismatic cult leader on the other a desperate bands of strangers both knowing they have to kill the other so they don't have to look over their shoulder. This is a WWE film, a disturbing WWE film. You expect them to grab a wrestler say he's a scientistiifc experiment or alien commando, then grab another wrestler and chase him down, some side effects car chase movies over. this was actually a thought provoking mess of a movie that you never knew which way it was going. This is a WWE film.
