Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning
August. 20,2005Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning begins with Captain James B. Pirk of the starship Kickstart shipwrecked on the 21st century Earth with his crew. Originally from the distant future, Pirk and his crew traveled back in time to save the Earth from hostile aliens, but lost their ship and became stranded. Pirk's daily routine consists mainly of stuffing his face at the local fast food restaurant, and he is finding it difficult to convince the ladies he is, in fact, an intergalactic space hero from the future. As the prospects for humanity's conquest of space look increasingly bleaker, Pirk comes up with a questionable plan to save mankind's future...

It's a mild crowd pleaser for people who are exhausted by blockbusters.
A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."
This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
STAR RATING: ***** Saturday Night **** Friday Night *** Friday Morning ** Sunday Night * Monday Morning What better time to release this low budget Finnish ST spoof than at a time when there's a big, major new film in the cinemas? Even if it is straight to DVD? And even if it is crap? With character names like Fukov and Cochbrane, this seems to be trying to copy the style of Leslie Nielsen's classic spoofs over the years, but the result is desperate enough for everyone to see, and the stark, humourless Finnish voices make it even harder to get into a comedy mood (man, dubbing would have been a better option.) The technical design and effects are just about good enough to overcome the unconvincing sets (a bunch of Finnish trying to act American...in a "real" American diner?) but I like my spoofs short and sweet and at over an hour and a half, someone got too carried away here and clearly knew less about the art of great spoofery than Seltzer and Friedberg (yes, that bad!) Jerry Zucker shouldn't lose any sleep. *
When I was little, I used to watch Star Trek every week. The adventures of the crew on that ship were cool for a eleven-year old. Then I grew a little older. I started to notice things. Why doesn't the stars move outside the windows when the ship travels? Why does all aliens look like humans? Why was the plot just a sci-fi soap-opera? I left the Star Trek series to better sci-fi.And now I return to Star Trek once again, in this Finnish parody, made with no budget, no actors and by a bunch of guys with no previous experience of movies. And it not only manages to be much better than the material it parodies, it manages to be much better than most movies released out of Hollywood today. In fact, this and V for Vendetta are likely the two best sci-fi movies of 2005.After seven years of hard work, the team behind Star Wreck release their movie, free of charge, over the internet. I'm pretty certain some of the millions of downloaders got it because it was free, but still, most of them heard "It's good" and not "It's free" from their friends.I hope this is the start of a new era. Sounds cheesy, I know. In a time when actors get payed millions for movies, special effects look fake when the studio is world-leading, and piracy is abundant, a movie like Star Wreck fits just perfectly. Hopefully more will follow this example and show their enthusiasm instead of their greed. What to say about the movie? It's funny, it's good-looking, it's professional, the effects rock, the space scenes are unbelievable(apparently it took 5 years to render) and the team seem more dedicated and motivated by the reactions of the fans than any Hollywood actor is by the $100000000 paycheck. What have you got to lose, except 1 hr and 43 minutes? Check out Star Wreck, buy it even. It's definitely something.
I was visiting a site a while ago and happened to see the Title - Star Wreck: In the Pirkining. Name sounded funny but otherwise I'm no fan of such stuff, they outright are fatally boring for me. And I can't stand the feeling of being embarrassed by the low quality and class these movies provides. I admit I'm too picky or something like that - perhaps even worser than that. But now some folks told me to watch this crap, OK I do it for peace of mind. I knew it would be poor acting and all that goes with it. So down in the couch and start watching... OK acting was better than expected, young people and amateurs and all that. They did better than expected in fact. Then it began to be boring at times, but it was much better than anticipated. Seen professional actors do worse. And when the SFX come about... ouch! And ouch again! Damn it! Hollywood! I think you are a bunch of cheats and other ugly words I can come up with. The Quality here is - well let me put it in this way. You're asleep in your couch, then someone start doing a drum-roll with a frying-pan on your head. Stunning is perhaps the more correct word here. I can only say, SEE IT!. And do it a second and a third time. For me most movies are not that exiting to see a second time, all movies ends up being boring after too many views, but hey this one is worth seeing a fourth time for me, perhaps even a fifth :))
No one in Finland new about star wreck when it was relished, but now its the most seen Finnish movie ever! And for a good reason... its AMAZING! I just laugh et when the movie went on. Its have to be because some off the comedy is so naively played that its brilliant. I have to admit that the first part of the movie was pretty bad... UP TO THE POINT THEY GO TO THE NUCKLEAR PLANT!!!! its brilliant wrom that point on. Its hard to image that the movie was made whit 20,000marks (old Finnish curensy. About 3500euros) you cant imagine how much you can do whit few young guess from Turku and a little ambition. the SFX are amazing. but the main part off the movie is the comedy. You will miss Few things by the firs time like when pirk and his crew get to Baabel 5 there's all kinds off things all over the place. Like the MaC Baabels singe. A lot of thinking went for this movie so it was shot in seven years. I cant wait for their next peace Ironsky that they are working on. it wont take seven years to shoot it. ill take the makers word for it. this is really one of the most important movies for Finnish and independent cinema in my books. WHY? Because its for once a great peace of comedy.Ps: This is my first review so go easy on me...heh..
