Mary and her steady, Jack, have differing opinions on "the stage"-- Mary wishes to devote her life to the craft, while Jack strives to settle down and leave all that play-acting behind. When a traveling troupe that performs a Fall-of-Roman epic is ordered to strike, both Mary and Jack are called upon to participate in their stead.

Janie lives to dance and will dance anywhere, even stripping in a burlesque house. Tod thinks he can get what he wants from Janie, Patch thinks Janie is using her charms rather than talent to get to the top, and Janie thinks Patch is the greatest. Steve, the stage manager, has the Three Stooges helping him manage all the show girls. Fred Astaire and Nelson Eddy make appearances as famous Broadway personalities.

The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.
