There's a more than satisfactory amount of boom-boom in the movie's trim running time.

This is a touching documentary. No gimmicks or cheap shots (very unlike Michael Moore). You get to know the subjects so well, particularly LaShunda and Richard. I feel so sad for Richard, and LaShunda for that matter (I found out she has passed on last year). Richard put everything on the line to compete that year, even his marriage and family. These are real people taking giant leaps of faith to be the best at something that is widely considered to be man's greatest fear.I myself am terrified of Public Speaking and am so inspired by their stories. You'll be amazed at how attached you get to these people in the span of only 90 minutes. A must see.

I recently watched SPEAK and loved it! It is an amazing story of quirky, flawed and inspiring people, who compete for the championships of public speaking. Their journey is captivating. I laughed out loud, cheered and cried as they struggled to achieve their dreams. The characters each have a strength and drive that makes you want to root for them. But as their story unfolds, so does their flaws...which not only make them complex and fascinating but leaves you questioning if you really want them to win.The Directors do an amazing job of keeping you on the edge of your seat! If you are scared to speak in public, this film will inspire and teach you to find your own voice. It is a story of hope and redemption and leaves you asking yourself...are you living your best life? would highly recommend it!!! A Must See!!

I laughed and cried. This movie took us through many of the emotions involved with public speaking on both a daily level as well professionally. I've seen some documentaries with the similar competition format, but this one probably has the most emotion of any I've seen. The story of LaShunda Rundles is really just...it brings tears to my eyes just thinking about. The fear of public speaking part is short but funny and really draws you in. My husband and I were really captivated. He actually said "this is way better than I thought it would be" and by the end he was genuinely moved. Great little movie, especially if you like documentaries.

The documentary, "Speak," follows a set of six contestants as they compete in the Toastmasters International Speech Contest for the title of World's Best Public Speaker. The film quickly introduces Toastmasters, a public organization devoted to public speaking and leadership training, and conveys the contest rules. Contestants have 5 to seven minutes on stage to tell their story, reach their audience, and win the support of the judges. The real power of the film is revealed through the back stories of the contestants, which helps to explain their motivations and their drive to "be the best." It's a fascinating look at a diverse group of people united in their drive to be the best possible speaker that they can be.It's refreshingly different from today's crop of artificially hyped up reality shows. This is real drama, with real people, who all want to win, and, maybe, even deserve to win. In the end, only one can go home with the top award. It's well-directed, moves quickly, and juxtaposes the stories of all the contestants to good effect. It's surprisingly powerful and affecting. Well done.
