To do this it presents its material in unexpected, even outlandish ways: the shock of the new." - Viktor Shklovsky ***** This short hybrid film departs from the remediation of a low resolution .jpg file. Song of the Flies
Song of the Flies
The experimental animated film Song of the Flies (El Canto de las Moscas), translates the desolation caused by the violence of the Colombian armed conflict through the poetic voice of Maria Mercedes Carranza (1945–2003) and the audiovisual dialogue between 9 Colombian women. In 24 places, as a transit over the course of a day (Morning, Day, Night) a map of terror is drawn where massacres took place in Colombia in the 1990s. Archival images, the artists’ personal memories and the use of loops and analogue materials bring to life the landscapes ravaged by violence and build a polyphony of memory and mourning, a universal song of pain.

Observe These Words
Observe These Words focuses on endagered amphibians. The latin name for the amphibian, amphibia, refers to life on two elements (land and water). The two also draw on the structure of the film, as images depict the artificial, regulated habitat of small animals, whilst the voice-over emphasizes the call of freedom and future.

Outhere (for Lee Lozano)
Outhere (for Lee Lozano)
After 'Communicating Vessels' (FID 2020), the artist-filmmaker duo Annie McDonell and Maïder Fortuné are back. Once again, the question is that of art, its teaching, the painful articulation between thought, practice and the living shell that embraces and brings it to life. An affair as ancient as the first Romantic period, its complexity fully intact, the challenge here is multiplied by the study of an extremely singular and insufficiently known figure of 20th century history: Lee Lozano. Painter, particularly radical conceptual artist and then recluse, for many years this woman filled similar small coloured spiral notebooks with her thoughts and plans for her work.

As they do, the black and white preconceptions slowly begin to melt off rugged, wrinkled, skin, which the camera interprets from an almost obscenely close distance.

In 2016, we visited Filmoteca Española (Spanish Cinematheque) in search of information for a research project on the documentary film Rocío, which had been censored in the early 1980s. Among the materials deposited in its warehouses 260 rolls of 16mm negative film were kept. They were the outtakes from the editing, footage that was left out of the final version. The forgotten images of a banned film come to life on the screen after 40 years.

In her film, the director juxtaposes Lithuanian mythology on household deities and the current situation in the Netherlands, where the housing crisis has pushed people to live in camping vans. The stories of the inhabitants of the camping village about their destinies and life philosophies, contrasting with the footage of their vans, are a testimony of the effects of late capitalism on everyday life, from which the old deities have been disappearing.

Ramdan Muslim - in Quarantine with God
The corona year 2020 has been examined from all angles by the media. But what was it like to hold Ramadan in a year of restrictions, prohibitions and social distancing? Six young Muslims express their thoughts and feelings about a different kind of year when communal meals and prayer lines were replaced by a quarantine that pulls the individual relationship with God into focus. What can poetry and the quarantine of the heart teach us about a deeper meaning at a time when illness and fear are so predominant? And what kind of spirituality do we dare imagine in a society that moves further and further away from believing in God?
