The Truth Illusion
The Truth Illusion investigates one of the most profound questions that philosophers through the ages have tried to address. From Plato to Immanuel Kant to Gilles Deleuze, thinkers have asked: what can we prove to be the truth? The investigation examines these questions in the context of the United States today. Is it possible, in such a deeply divided society, for people to view different ‘realities’? The documentary by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit features commentary from philosophers, psychologists, social scientists and political commentators who discuss how the U.S. is now riven by radically differing views on what is real, and what is not. ‘The Truth Illusion’ looks at how those deepening divisions began, and how they have eroded faith in authority – spawning conspiracy theories and creating ‘alternative realities’.

Stop Filming Us But Listen
STOP FILMING US BUT LISTEN (2022) takes a closer look at the imbalance of power inherited from colonialism and its consequences on the representation of The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In his documentary STOP FILMING US (2020), set in the city of Goma in DRC, Dutch filmmaker Joris Postema examined the link between stereotypes and this skewed balance of power. After a screening of STOP FILMING US in Goma, the audience wondered if the film could tell a different story using the same footage. Kumbuka
Two young Congolese filmmakers are surprised by the enthusiastic reception of Stop Filming Us, a Dutch film shot in Goma by Joris Postema in 2019. That film enters into dialogue with local image makers to ask whether a western perspective on the Congo can do justice to reality, but in the view of those makers themselves, it conversely illustrates the problem perfectly: this production's perspective also distorts impressions of Congolese reality. In answer to their critique, the Dutch producer made the raw footage available to them so they could edit it into their own film. But can the images – without context – really tell their story?
