Scratch (Triptych 3)
At the end of 2016, some circonstances made that after a gap of 15 years I resumed scratching directly on film. I first made a series of thirty one short loops that were posted as GIF’s on Facebook, in May and June 2016. Then I proceeded to build a film out of those segments with the support of the infinite music of Malcolm Goldstein. The result is a meditation on time, both radically abstract and intensely material.

Chinese Ink
In Chinese Ink, composed from a series of shots taken with an iPhone, Salhab expands questions of location and the act of filmmaking itself. Some images were captured in the moment ‘without quite knowing why’, and others were filmed at an earlier time ‘with no apparent motive’ or as a result of specific circumstances. Salhab jotted down notes all along, excerpts from books he read or reread, sounds he recorded and preserved. He approached this film essay as a work in progress with no preconceived structure; instead, he let the work gradually reveal itself. All at once, in terms of ‘place’ and his relationship to ‘here’, with all its entanglements, it became clear to him that he needed to invoke the ‘elsewhere’, to start with the first place, his childhood in Senegal, and ‘retrace’ certain steps: his connection to armed struggles, the Palestinian cause, the present moment.

Print of Sleep 2016 is a is a single-channel video with sound of a durational performance by Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa. Edited down to a little under eighteen minutes for the video, the performance was originally presented at the sixth edition of the biennial event If I Can’t Dance I Don’t Want To Be Part of Your Revolution, Amsterdam in 2016 and again at KunstWerke in Berlin, where this video was filmed. It depicts a predominantly empty white room with a number of bare metal-framed beds with wire-mesh supports, some double-tiered, and lit underneath by fluorescent tubes that are placed across the space.
