Why so much hype?
Best movie ever!
Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
... of how screen writers, casting angencies, exposure units, cameramen, cutter and directors can fail. The plot is just miserable meaningless, so i believe the script was once hidden in the "Room of Requirements" by a young Alfred Hitchcock with intension to hide it to future audiences and save them from wasting their time and money! As i am writing a review on this title, this somehow went terrbily wrong. Sometimes films with goofy plots can still be saved by good acting or at least by creating a remarkeble feeling to the viewer. Unfortunately all characters (including supporting actors) were miscasted. None of the casted actors go very well together. I am absolutely positive the caster was a one-eyed drunken pirate. As if this wasn't bad enough, the exposure and cutting disturbs furthermore. At one scene you see Maria and Mark at the kitchen table with a bright lamp above their heads filmed in "distance shot" - in "close up" you see shadows on their faces going mysteriously upside-down! Did the kitchentable turn into a lightbox or did the exposure guys accidently roll their joint with a page of the script? This could explain, why the camera starts hysterically shaking when someone is screaming. Almost unbearable! While watching this film for ten minutes, i wished an electricity blackout to happen at home just like in the movie. Unfortunately my better-half forced me to watch it till the end. She is for sure much more scary then this movie!
A teenage girl (Anna Paquin) moves into a remote countryside house with her family, only to discover that their gloomy new home has a horrifying past that threatens to destroy the family. The film was produced by Julio Fernández and Brian Yuzna. The Yuzna connection is interesting, but unfortunately does nothing to save it. (I am still unclear why he lives and works in Spain.) Darkness received extremely negative reviews from both critics and general audiences. It currently holds a 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 53 reviews. It is one of only eight films to ever receive "F" CinemaScore, indicating overwhelmingly popular dislike. Sadly, I have to agree. I found this all very boring, even though I would want to like it.
Boy-oh-boy, I'm tellin' ya, this "uncensored" version of Darkness was certainly mighty tame by today's super-gruesome standards of horrific horror films. And, not only was its gore-level almost at the point of being anemic (which was truly unforgivable) - But, the effect of its overall scare-factor never once came close to scoring a frighteningly legitimate bull's-eye. Never. At times I thought that Darkness was, indeed, coming close to hitting its intended mark, but, then, it inexplicably held back at that crucial point of achieving its desired goal. And, so, Darkness failed to satisfactorily deliver the horrific goods. And, on top of that major disappointment, this film's story about a happy-go-lucky family who move into a house that holds within its walls an unspeakably terrifying secret, covered no new ground, whatsoever.Yep. You can bet that we've all certainly seen, in one way or another, this one's all too familiar and predictably prepackaged story umpteen bloody times.Mind you, Darkness did manage (at times) to create an atmosphere of tension-filled dread that actually held my attention to some degree. But, its mounting suspense that led up to its final, climatic "twist" lost tons of steam when a minor key-character in the story was put in the unfavorable position of having to explain (at verbatim) everything covering a long, 40-year stretch of time. This explanation conveniently tied up all of the loose ends (leading up to this frenzied moment) and even threw a solar eclipse into the mix, for good measure.Anyways - I figure that a lot of this film's significant downfalls can be attributed to its rating of being suitable for those viewers 14 years and older. So, with that in mind, any out-and-out horror, and gore, is certainly going to be carefully held in check so as not to totally gross-out, or corrupt, those dear, impressionable, prepubescent minds of the younger generation.
This movie looked very good when i got it, the back of the case made me very interested and i was excited to Watch it.Let me start by saying it took for EVER for the story to move on. I mean come on! The move to the house and then you watch them do stuff for like 4 days until something happens.I mean if i was the director of this movie i would have taken 4 or 5 of those days and cut them out, and made all that stuff happen in 2 days and then use the rest of the time on the details and explaining things clearer.I thought it was going to be scary. I did not think it was very scary at all. The only reason i don't give this movie a 1 is that the story was not a complete fail. The story did keep me interested for a while. Then the start took so long to get going by the time the first big thing happened i am was bored with the movie.I would skip this one, unless you can like borrow it from a friend and watch it when your sick or something.
