A man offers to play the flute and all hell breaks loose from there. The weapon is a folded chair, the victims his fellow professionals and the crime is predestined by karma. As the camera lingers on the gory actions, set to offbeat music and at times muted and occurring out-of-frame, a foreboding, dark and somewhat sinister overtone hangs heavy in the air. Korpus Grotesk
The eye operates with such amazing precision that individual film frames can be read. Nevertheless, when the content in their sequence becomes too different, the perception of the actually projected content is stretched to its limits. Shown in individual frames, the alphabet is something we can only assume while placing trust in its reproduction. The 25 frames per second are rendered a visual challenge. Additionally, as the spoken alphabet is condensed into one second, it loses its contours. The story, however, still remains complete; it is interpreted, which makes for the beauty of this film: Not everything needs to be perceived or shown, we fill in the missing parts through interpretation in our heads.
Nan Goldin: I Remember Your Face
Documentary portrait of the New York photographer Nan Goldin.
Provenance
A film work of cinematic scale, Provenance traces in reverse the global trade in furniture from the Indian city of Chandigarh. Conceived in the 1950s by architects Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, Chandigarh’s controversial modernist architecture includes original pieces of furniture—tables, chairs, settees, desks—created specifically for the building’s interiors. Recently these pieces have appeared at auction houses around the world, commanding record prices. Starting with the Chandigarh furniture in the present, the film begins in New York apartments, London townhouses, Belgian villas and Paris salons of avid collectors. From there, it moves backwards to the furniture’s sale at auction, preview exhibitions, and photography for auction catalogues, to restoration, cargo shipping containers, and Indian ports — ending finally in Chandigarh, a city in a state of entropy.
